Cameras – My new toy arrives

I mentioned last week I was expecting my new gift to myself. I actually own three cameras. An old D70, a slightly less old D7000, and an old but much less old D810. I hate changing lenses so the D810 has a huge heavy 150- – 600mm lens on it but it’s not in great health after it was knocked to the ground while attached to its tripod. I didn’t think anything of it as it was a soft landing on a rug. However, my optimistic thoughts were soon thrown into the photographic abyss when I realised the LCD was damaged.. I tried during the Covid pandemic to find someone to fix it but nothing was normal and it remains in its blank screen state. My plan is to pack it up next week and send it to a Nikon repair centre. I expect it will cost ยฃ200 but be worth it as it’s a good camera.

In the meantime I had the luck to have money to buy something new. I looked at every brand from Nikon to Leica to Sony. The new Sony mirrorless though was ยฃ6000. That was without a lens!

Then,my searching led me to a strange bridge camera – the Sony RX10. Iโ€™d watched several you tube reviews showing its range of skills. I was hooked. How could such a small camera with a fixed lens do so much. I took a gamble and ยฃ1600 lighter it arrived during the week.

Allegedly it had a range of 24 – 600 mm. I couldn’t get my head round that. I thought I’d probably made a big mistake ( again).

However, my very early plays with it suggest maybe I haven’t wasted a lot of cash!

I haven’t had hardly any time with it but YouTube has already helped me learn to set up a program for photographing fast objects like birds.

I’ve alsoplayed with various focus modes.

I took some deer with the D810 and 150-600 mm lens a while ago.

Unfortunately I couldn’t persuade the deer to do a repeat cameo but this is the same view with the tiny RX10 minus the deer.

In really poor light and sleet falling and me not knowing what to do I managed to capture a wren on my patio through dirty double glazing. ( don’t tell my wife I said that!!!)

Early doors but it looks very promising – further updates next week.
