Back of the Net August 30th 2023

It’s been another exciting week in the world of football. The Saudi Pro League continues to hoover up footballers from all over the world with lavish contracts and incentives to go play in the sunshine.

Neymar was the latest star to join the growing numbers of footballers plying their trade in the desert. In the good old days players contracts were probably 20 shillings and all the pies the player could eat.

Things have moved on a bit since then. Allegedly Neymar’s signed a contract worth 2.5 million pounds a week! The deal also includes a 20 room house with 8 employees to help the boy keep it pristine, plus a cook. He’ll never get thirsty as the deal also promises to keep his fridge continuously stocked with his favourite Acar and Guarana drinks.

Add in a luxury cars with a 24/7 driver available , a private jet, 3 saunas, a 40 metre swimming pool plus his new employers will pick up his restaurant tabs if his in-house cook has the night off.

So, basically our lucky boy has free board and travel plus one hundred and twenty five million in cash. I wonder how long it took him to sign the piece of paper.………

Where is it going to end. You can imagine young premiership players on decent wages with their DB10’s and luxury apartments in London or Manchester thinking ‘ wait a minute, I’ve got to cook for myself, clean the loo and drive to work. I even have to pay for my meal if I go out. That’s not fair’

At the other end of the scale I remember gong to see my local team play only to spot the Captain of the team and 3 other injured players standing outside the local chippie munching fish and chips. How the other half lives.

SPANISH KISS

The other football drama of the week involved a kiss. As the Spanish Women’s football team went to accept their medals after winning the women’s World Cup, the Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales planted a smackerooni right smack on the lips of Spanish player Jenni Hermoso.

I’m not condoning what he did but the furore from the football world and media has been unbelievable. Even Rubiales mother has reportedly gone on hunger strike in a church to protest at the way her son has been treated. Football is a passionate game but he was working at the time so maybe kissing an employee without her permission in front of a worldwide audience of millions wasn’t the brightest. He apologised but I think a trip to HR might be coming.

I used to joke that I’d complained to HR about not being sexually harassed enough. These days though you need to stick to the rules and treat people the way they want to be treated. I must admit I think Rubiales will be gone pretty soon and all for one second of craziness. We’ll be watching team goal celebrations from now on………….

What’s your view on both the Saudi league and the kissing president?
